Deburring

After every skate sharpening and before testing the edges, we recommend deburring both sides of the blade with a deburring stone, rubber stone or leather strop. In any sharpening (manual or automated), when the stone cuts the steel, it is cutting out the desired hollow and often this cut will leave behind steel that has “folded over” the sides of the blade. By using a deburring stone, you can easily remove this folded over steel and ensure the two edges of your steel are clean.

When selecting which deburring stone to use – here is a helpful guide:

The rubberized stone in the Coated Steel Kit should be held at a 45 degree angle on the edge of the skate blade. The honing stone should be held flat along the side of the skate blade.

How many cycles should I run?

Accepted Answer

As a general guideline, hockey players and figure skaters should sharpen their skates approximately every 3-4 hours of ice time. For an average player during the season, that means you should be sharpening your skates at least once a week for optimal performance.

However, the frequency of sharpening depends on many factors such as the skater’s weight, skating style and the condition of the ice. If the skater is having difficulty maintaining control or balance on the ice, it may be time to get their skates sharpened, regardless of how many hours the skater has been on ice.
Ultimately, it’s up to the individual skater to determine how often to sharpen their skates based on individual needs and preferences. Our in-depth research has proven that a skater with consistently sharp skates out-performs the player who infrequently sharpens their skates.

It is important to understand that these recommendations are guidelines. In order to play at your best, you should not wait to sharpen your skates. Proper maintenance of your skate blades is key to on-ice performance. Before every skate, you should check your edges for any damage or dullness. You can damage steel simply by stepping on something in the locker room or hitting your blades against the boards or goal posts – any blemish in the blade can cause a decrease in performance when skating.

How do I initiate a return?

In order to initiate a return please head to our Return/Exchange portal to receive a return merchandise authorization number ("RMA") and shipping instructions.

Within ten (10) days after receiving your RMA, you must deliver the Product (with prominent indication of the RMA) to Sparx Hockey (or as otherwise provided in our shipping instructions).

Once the Product is received and inspected, we will send you an email to notify you that we have received your return. We will also notify you whether or not your refund has been approved. If approved, we will reimburse you for the price you paid for the returned Product (less a 20% restocking fee and excluding all shipping costs) no later than thirty (30) days from the date of our receipt of such returned Product accompanied by the applicable RMA.

Sparx Grinding Rings (Radius Ring or FIRE Ring) cannot be returned (and no refund will be made) after they have been used. The Starter Pack is only eligible for return in full, including all three Rings.

Only unused Grinding Rings or the complete Starter Pack can be returned.

How to Update The Sparx Sharpener 3 Firmware

To update the firmware, connect your Sharpener 3 (ES300) to the Sparx Hockey app.

Download on: App Store or Google Play

Tap the gear icon (shown below) in the top right corner, then select "Firmware Update" to check for any available updates.

Please keep both the Sharpener powered on and the app open during the update. Stepping away with your phone or minimizing the app may cause the update to fail.
A weak Wi-Fi or cellular signal can also interrupt the process and result in Error Code 90, so we recommend completing the update in a strong, stable connection environment.

If you haven't yet connected your Sharpener 3 to the Sparx Hockey App:

Click the "Sharpen" tab on the bottom menu of the app.

Tap "Add a Sharpener".

You’ll then be prompted to set up using either BEAM or the Optical Alignment Kit. If you’ve already completed setup, simply skip through the instructions.

After the instructions, select "Connect Sharpener".

Make sure your Sharpener is powered on. Press the bluetooth button on the Sharpener's keypad to enter pairing mode.

You'll then see "Connecting to Sharpener".

Once connected, click "Sharpen Now", or if you're just getting started with your Sharpener 3, select "Sharpening Instructions".

Understanding Radius of Hollow

Choosing the right hollow depends on your preferences: do you want more bite or more glide? The most common radius of hollow is 1/2”, which you’ll find in most retail settings. Here are our recommendations based on different players:

For Children/Young Players: We recommend a 1/2" Radius Ring for players with less body weight.
For Goalies: We suggest a 3/8" to 1/2" Radius Ring, depending on how much bite you want (smaller radius = more bite).
For Adult Players: Our most popular ring is the 1/2" Radius Ring, but advanced players may prefer a 5/8" Radius Ring for more glide.

How Many Cycles Should I Run? (Including When Changing Hollows)

Curious about how many cycles you need to run? Do your skates seem dull? Changing Hollows? We recommend using a sharpie or similar type of marker to apply some marks to the bottom of your steel where you will be sharpening. Mark a line on the heel, center, and toe (A in the below example).

Then run 2-4 cycles and check back to see if the marker has been removed. If the marker is gone (C in the example below), you have successfully set your edges. If there is still marker left on the blade (B), continue running cycles until it is completely gone. Due to variations in blade thickness, steel quality, and edge height difference, some new steel may require fewer than 10 cycles, and some more.

What is Error 90 and How to Fix It

Accepted Answer

Error Code 90 means that the firmware update didn’t complete successfully. This can happen if the connection between your phone and the Sharpener is interrupted during the update or if your Wi-Fi or cell signal is weak during the update.

How to Fix It:

Close the Sparx Hockey App (not just minimize, but close).
Turn the sharpener off for 5 seconds, then power back on.
Ensure good Wi-Fi or cell signal on your phone. Weak signal will cause the 90 error to keep showing.
Open app and connect to sharpener. Stay in the app during the update. Don’t let your phone screen go to sleep or switch to other apps.
Keep the phone close to the sharpener during the update. Do not walk away with phone.
If the update did not appear automatically, try the firmware update again by tapping the gear icon in the top right corner of the Sharpen Screen, then selecting “Firmware Update”.

If you still see the error, try powering the Sharpener off and back on, then repeat the steps above.

Sharpener Maintenance

Periodically it is recommended to clean the steel dust that collects in your Sharpeners base. We recommend using the SDR Wand, or a vacuum for cleaning this steel dust. We do NOT recommend using compressed air for cleaning. Compressed air can blow steel dust into unwanted areas and lead to complications.

We do NOT recommend using any lubricants or waxes. Wax/lube would clog up the grinding ring, so it would hurt more than it would help. It's not a required step with Sparx, because every cycle we run performs a "finish" pass. On a manual sharpener the operator might perform a few aggressive passes before making their final finishing pass. Our sharpener is always doing a finishing pass.

BEAM is compatible with most 3mm and 4mm player and goalie steel.

Why is it necessary to adjust height?

The grinding ring height needs to be adjusted because steel comes in many different heights (not talking about thickness). Some steel is taller than typical steel so that players can make lower/tighter turns without the skate boot hitting the ice. Modern goalie skate blades also tend to be taller than typical player skate steel. Because of this variation, Sparx allows the user to adjust the contact point where the grinding wheel touches the skate blade.

Radius vs. FIRE Rings

We offer two different types of Grinding Rings. Sparx Radius Rings produce the traditional round radius of hollow while the FIRE Rings produce a flat-bottom hollow. The flat bottom hollow is designed to allow more glide in the blade without sacrificing the edges that you want/need for quick stops and sharp turns.

BEAM Charging

In order to properly charge BEAM, you must use a power adapter (brick) that provides either 2.0 or more Amps or 10W of power. Usually this information is included on the power adapter itself of the power adapter packaging.

Please note that when BEAM is on the charger and charging, the RED Sparx “burst” will be “pulsing” slowly.  When charging is complete, the left and right LEDs will be bright GREEN and the RED Sparx Burst will be solid RED. 

The BEAM charging pad should be illuminated green and solid when BEAM is on the charger (as shown below).  The charing pad should NOT be flashing green.  

If the charging pad is flashing green, please readjust your BEAM on the charging pad until the LED is solid green.

How do I cancel my order?

Why doesn't the grinding ring produce sparks?

Accepted Answer

The most significant factor is the grinding ring used by Sparx. Our grinding ring is made with a completely different material than a traditional grinding wheel. We're using a synthetic diamond abrasive. This different abrasive material results in a cooler sharpening process and also a cooler swarf. What's a swarf you say (besides a fantastic scrabble word)? Swarf is the technical term for the fine metal dust that is thrown off the skate blade as it is sharpened. Since the swarf is not as hot in the Sparx process, it is not as visibly bright as it would be in a traditional sharpening. Skate blade material also plays a part in this equation. Some skate steel that contains a greater percentage of carbon (skates from 10+ years ago)and even newer nitinol blades (a nickel-titanium alloy) will show a hot/bright swarf (nitinol swarf is hot white - which is very cool).

How to Check for Firmware Updates

Follow these steps to check for and apply any available firmware updates:

Open the Sparx Hockey Mobile App Launch the app on your mobile device.
Connect to Your Sharpener Tap the Sharpen icon in the bottom menu to connect to your Sparx Sharpener.
Automatic Firmware Check Once connected, the sharpener will automatically check for any available firmware updates.

Internet Connection Required

An active internet connection (Wi-Fi or cellular data) is required to complete the firmware check. Please ensure your phone is connected to the internet before proceeding.

What to Expect

No Update Available If no firmware update is needed, Alert 71 will clear, and you can proceed with sharpening.
Update AvailableIf an update is available:
- A pop-up will appear within the app.
- Tap “Update Firmware” to begin the update process.
- Once complete, Alert 71 will be cleared.

Important: Stay Connected During the Update

To ensure the firmware update completes successfully, follow these guidelines:

Stay in the App Remain in the Sparx Hockey app while the update is in progress.
Keep Your Screen Active Prevent your phone from going to sleep and avoid switching to other apps.
Stay Close to the Sharpener Keep your phone near the sharpener at all times.
Do Not Walk Away Avoid carrying the phone away from the unit to maintain a strong connection.

How to Temporarily Bypass Alert 71

If you need to sharpen before updating:

Press and hold the Cancel button on the sharpener for 4 seconds.
This will temporarily clear Alert 71, allowing you to continue sharpening.
Afterward, return to the steps above to complete the firmware update.

What Accessories do I need?

Grinding Rings are purchased separately from the Sharpeners. Everything else you need to get started is included with the purchase of your sharpener - alignment tools, goalie risers, power cord and the honing stone kit (a medium-grit honing stone and a leather strop). Youth Skates can be sharpened size youth 9 and above.

BEAM, Sparx Hockey's patented Blade Edge Accuracy Measurement device. Utilizing state-of-the art laser technology, the Sparx BEAM measures blade edges to 1/10,000th of an inch. Included with every Sparx Sharpener 3 and Sharpener 3 Pro, Sparx BEAM can be used with any Generation Sparx Sharpener.

The Blade Holder is another popular tool if you're the type to carry extra steel because with a twist and a click you're ready to sharpen your spare blades without the hassle of having to install them on your skate.

Travel Case, if you plan to travel with your Sparx Sharpener we recommend purchasing a Travel Case. We offer a Soft Travel Case which is great for taking the Sharpener with you to the rink, or on the road to a tournament. If you plan to travel with your Sharpener on a plane we recommend the Hard Travel Case. (For more information on travel cases and compatibility, check out this article).

The Sharpener Cover is great for keeping dust and debris out of the machine while it's not in use.

Coated Steel Kit, if you have black coated steel we recommend purchasing the Coated Steel Kit. A traditional honing stone will scratch the coating on coated steel, so we recommend using a rubberized stone and a leather strop to deburr. We offer both the rubberized stone and a leather strop in our Coated Steel Kit.

The Figure Skate Adapter, if you have figure skates we offer the Figure Skate Adapter - Sparx Sharpener 2/Sparx Sharpener 3. This Figure Skate Adapter is compatible with the Sparx Sharpener 2 and 3. With the figure skate adapter in place, Sparx can sharpen most traditional, flat-sided blades. Sparx is not compatible with the multiple-piece, side-honed, tapered, or parabolic blades often used in competitive skating. Sparx Skate Blade Lifts, The Sparx Skate Blade Lifts were designed to assist users in sharpening higher on the toe of their skate blades and decrease the "transition area" where the Sparx Grinding Ring comes into contact with the skate steel. This product was initially used by top NHL Equipment Managers and is now accessible to all Sparx Sharpener owners. Just insert two Skate Lifts into your Sparx Sharpener and sharpen as usual. Does your sharpener do cross-grinding?

The cross-grind rings are only compatible with our PS100 and PS200 commercial model sharpeners.  To sharpen new steel, damaged steel or change hollows, we recommend using whichever Grinding Ring you prefer and sharpening 10 cycles.  We recommend using a sharpie or similar type of marker to apply some marks to the bottom of your steel where you will be sharpening.  Mark a line on the heel, center, and toe.  Then run a few cycles and check back to see if the marker has been removed.  If so, the hollow has been installed and you'll be good to go!  If any marker remains, you'll want to run a few more cycles until the marker is removed.

Alert 72 (error 72) indicates that you must check for a firmware update before you can continue sharpening. This alert cannot be bypassed—you are now required to verify whether an update is available.

Keeping your firmware up to date helps ensure your Sparx Sharpener performs at its best and has access to the latest features and improvements.

Unlike earlier alerts that could be temporarily dismissed, Alert 72 requires action. You will not be able to sharpen until your sharpener checks for available firmware updates through the Sparx Hockey Mobile App.

You should never submerge BEAM or get it wet.

Please follow these guidelines for cleaning: 

Outer plastic housing – Wipe with damp cloth. 
Orange Tilt Bar – Wipe with very soft cloth or soft facial tissue.  Do not use anything that may scratch the metal on the top surface (the small round metal area).  If you must use a damp cloth, please make sure to DRY the metal portions immediately. 
Protective glass on BEAM – Wipe with very soft cloth or soft facial tissue.  Do not use anything that may scratch the glass.  If you must use a damp cloth, please make sure to DRY the metal portions immediately.

By using Ultra Precision Mode (UPM), you will experience more frequent recommendations for "Fix Edges" due to a tighter tolerance on the "Green Zone" in BEAM results.

Fixing edges more often will result in:

Quicker depletion of Grinding Ring life
Additional time required to complete a sharpening
"Chasing" a perfect (.0000") reading that may not be achievable due to typical variations in skate steel, skate construction, the sharpening process, and repeatability of measurements.

PLEASE NOTE - An edge height difference of 1/10,000th of an inch (.0001") is undetectable by any level skater, including top NHL players.
